Born from a convention between the Pierre Mendes France University and the CNRS, the MSH-Alpes Unit has been a CNRS  Service and Research Unit (USR 3394) since January 1st 2011.

The Service and Research Unit is under the joint responsability  of UPMF and CNRS which provides it means and staff.
The building, built in 1994, is logistically managed by the Pierre Mendes France University. It hosts its own staff, researchers and PhD students from different laboratories belonging   to partners establishments which take part in one or more scientific activities of the MSH-Alpes Unit included in the  five year contract.

The MSH-Alpes  is ,since its creation  part of the GIS Maisons des sciences de l’homme network which includes the 21 other Humanities and social Sciences Houses which exist in France.

The MSH-Alpes is part of the first wave of Units created before the end of 2010, and proposed for renewal in the 2011-2014 five year contract.

The USR is lead by a director who is elected by the CNRS and UPMF on proposal of the Unit’s Pilot Committee for five years renewable once.

The MSH-Alpe  has a Pilot Committee composed  of 7 members : the Msh-Alpes Director, two CNRS representatives, the STENDHAL  University President (Grenoble 3) or  her  representative, the GIS Director or his representative.
The Pilot Committee evaluates the projects and the support actions given with the MSH-Alpes  prinding.
The Pilot Committee can ask if necessary for outside expertise to evaluate the selected projects. It meets at least once a year.

In accordance with the MSH network Charter, the MSH-Alpes Unit has an International Scientific Committee.
It is composed of the MSH-Alpes Director, its own scientifical research Director, the Director in charge of Research for UPMF or its representative, the scientific Council Representative of the National GIS MSH Network and ten  outside scientific experts  with  at least   one half  foreigners.
The International  Scientifical Committee  takes position on the  scientific organization of the MSH-Alpes and its concordance  with its  guardianships and partners institutions.
